| Customer Reviews: outstanding performance from a great star August 10, 2000 robbiejordanre@netscape.net (cardigan, wales, uk) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
anyone who enjoys 1950's films and andrew lloyd webber musicals will wonder why they waited so long to add this masterpiece to their collection. starring glenn close as norma desmond this cd gives supurb listening pleasure whilst following the story of a has-been movie star forgotten by her fans and studio. the score opens with an overture which immidiately brings to mind the splender and wealth of the early movie era, this is followed throughout the cd by songs which bring pictures to life. sunset boulevard is also available in a full length, 2 cd version which is worth getting as it contains more songs and dialogue. some newspaper reviewers in new york preferred the patti la pone version, however this one with miss close is the one with more spirit!. i was fortunate enough to see two stage versions of sunset boulevard, glenn close in los angeles and petula clark in london. miss close took on the role living and breathing the part. although she is amongst 15 or so to have played the role her voice is the one that everyone will remember.
One Song February 10, 2003 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Well Mr Lloyd Weber has done it again, nearly, this is a good CD and if you can bare to listen to Glen Close Warbling her way through the CD then go for it (aparently she was great on stage, but her singing voice alone leaves a little to be desired!) as the score of this musical is great. Unfortunately, as with alot of Lord Webers music, there is frequent use of the same tunes over and over, but far from this being an extremely critical review I have to say that the tunes he has written are great, the obvious ones are Norma Desmonds songs, 'With One Look' and 'As If We Never Said Goodbye' but as is often the way, there are moments of greatness in the most unlikely places. Sunset Boulevard the song is in my opinion a great song, its a you love it or hate it number! The orchestrations are also quite brilliant, and it adds up to a decent package. I would advise maybe tho to try and buy the full version as you will get more pleasure from that but this has all the main numbers on.
