Amazon.co.uk Review
Out with the bad--in with the good. The fifth entry in the Panther series has all the best elements: the most carefully choreographed fight with Cato, Herbert Lom hamming up Dreyfuss and a brilliant comic soundscape from Mancini. The opening credits is a montage of "The Pink Panther Theme", the "Alfred Hitchcock Theme", Batman, The Sound of Music, "Singin' in the Rain" and "Big Spender". Could such an intro possibly be topped? There's the exquisite "Inspector Clouseau Theme" on mandolin, keyboard and glockenspiel. Its lackadaisical tempo paces the detective's thought processes perfectly. Its best use is in the hilarious sequence where Clouseau attempts entry to a castle across the surrounding moat. The music's suggested dimwittedness is pure genius. Most delightful of all is "The Evil Theme": a chime reverberates beneath lightly treading guitar; the classic exaggerated cartoon steps of the Inspector's creeping around. By flute, percussion and the most innovative use of detuned pizzicato violin it becomes as important an invention as either the "Panther" or "Clouseau" themes (or the absent "A Shot in the Dark" theme). --Paul Tonks
