5 out of 5 stars This Really Is What Is Left.   September 28, 2008

First of all I have to point out that this is NOT that terrible BBC compilation DVD, but infact the compilation series from 1990. I'd say (from seeing the remaining episodes) that this really is the best that the BBC can come out with.

For those aware of what's missing, just the musical acts (but really they're not good enough, and were usually ignored by Cook).

Cook wasn't too happy when the original episodes were wiped by the Beeb, and came to begging them to not wipe the episodes (he even wanted to pay for the new tapes), but the Beeb being the "beeb" ignored Peter and wiped them!

When Cook and Moore reunited in 1987 for the American Comic Relief, they didn't seem too happy with each other and wouldn't follow their friendship until 1989 when Moore's movie career was just at the tip of the board. If you watch 'The Secret Policeman's Biggest Ball', then you can clearly see that they were back. Now with the friendship back, the BBC offered to do a search on what remains of 'Not Only... But Also...' and came back with three and a half hours of footage.

Edit it down to 175 minutes, and you've got seven 25 minute shows. Cook and Moore seemed happy with the series, as they even recorded a brand new sketch to introduce the VHS version, and even advertised the video on the BBC. Though they admitted that the VHS compilation of this series (a compilation of a compilation series???) lacked, they still supported it. That video was released on DVD and is the release we've come to hate.

This release is the best possible, and is to be owned by any Cook or Moore fan.
What I don't get though is why the Americans got it and not us?

Still, this is currently the ultimate release.

5 out of 5 stars Not as complete as you may think   October 5, 2008

I was delighted when I heard this would (at last) be a collection of the six shows broadcast in the early 90s rather than yet another re-release of the shorter BBC best-of VHS/DVD - even if it took a US release to get there. And of course it's worthy of 5 stars - anything involving Pete and Dud is in my book.

BUT watching this new DVD I notice there have (inexplicably) been some cuts made to sketches (eg the gastronomic guide to the North Circular). I don't know if these cuts existed in the 90s TV broadcast but it's extremely annoying. Pete and Dud die-hards be warned: this is not as complete as we may have hoped.

Dear BBC,

If it's not sad enough that not all episodes exist.
Why not just "What's left of... Not Only... But Also" This would make more sense to me as we already have a "Best of" DVD. I'm sure that all Peter Cook and Dudley Moore fans want all that's left, even if it means one more disc and a few extra pennies.

If I'm not mistaken this is going to be a direct copy of what was broadcast by the Beeb back in the early nineties, so yes it will be a step forward from the current best of. I was aged 12 then, and the way the BBC are shaping up, I'll be dead by the time I get to see All That's Left.
