Hugely enjoyable soundtrack to the hit FOX show 'Glee' October 29, 2009 Truecolours09 (London, UK) 27 out of 29 found this review helpful
TV show 'Glee' has yet to be shown on E4 over here but is already a breakout hit for FOX in the US. Created by Ryan Murphy, it's a hugely enjoyable take on the American high school experience. By focusing on a school's 'Glee' club - singing group - the show is able to introduce high impact musical numbers every week.
Divorced from its source material, this soundtrack album easily stands up on it's own merits. There are cheesy moments, that goes without saying, but there is also some outstanding music. Most of these come from actress Lea Michele, who interprets every song in interesting and often moving ways. Rihanna's 'Take A Bow' and Queen's 'Somebody To Love' both benefit from Lea's gorgeous vocals that combine Broadway style theatrics with a fragile vulnerability that stops you in your tracks.
Matthew Morrison takes on 'Gold Digger' and 'Bust A Move' with surprising success - his genuine real-life love of rnb shines through. He is also excellent on Heart's classic 'Alone', which is a duet with musicals legend Kristen Chenowith.
Standout track is the incendiary 'Bust Your Windows', in which Amber Riley takes Jazmine Sullivan's slyly malicious kiss-off to a cheating partner to new heights. The production is terrific and Amber sells the song for all it's worth.
This is not an album that will appeal to listeners seeking authenticity or innovation. It's a warm, life-affirming celebration of pop music that offers simple enjoyment and appreciation. Like the show itself, 'Glee' wears its heart on its sleeve and isn't afraid to be emotional.
Great Variety Of Music!! February 19, 2010 Katrina-UK (Stockport, Cheshire, United Kingdom) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Firstly I've got to say, some of the songs on this album are equally as good or BETTER than the originals. Kanye West' 'Golddigger' for instance, I always thought it was a good song but was lacking something. Glee has hit the nail on the spot with their version! Other favourites on the album are 'Alone', 'Don't Stop Believin', 'Defying Gravity', 'Somebody To Love', 'No Air', 'You Keep Me Hangin On', 'Maybe This Time', 'Taking Chances', 'Can't Fight This Feeling'.
If you want a good compilation album with a variety of different songs, then let this be the one!
A fantastic CD, an amazing show! January 21, 2010 Joy L. Thomas 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Really great selection of songs which showcase the cast's voices brilliantly.
The opener is Journey's 'Don't stop believin', a song which broke into the charts 3 times already in 2010 (including this version). It's full of life, poppy and a great song to sing along to. Matthew Morrison is a broadway veteran, playing Link in Hairspray, so his voice is guaranteed to carry a tune. He showcases his skills on 'Can't Fight This Feeling' and Kanye's 'Gold Digger' specifically. Lea Michele - another broadway vet, could be mistaken for Idina Menzel (Wicked (Idina Menzel),Rent - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) in looks and voice. She covers Rhianna's 'Take a Bow' and fills it with emotion.
Talking about Idina and Wicked, Lea Michele is also on the Wicked 'Defying Gravity' cover at the end of the album. And Wicked also brings us Kristen Chenoweth performing Heart's 'Alone' and with Lea 'Maybe this Time', the latter made famous by Liza Minnelli (the story comes full circle - Kristen Chenoweth > Wicked > The Wizard Of Oz [1939] [DVD] > Judy Garland > Liza Minnelli)
Highly recommended. Particularly for those who like musical theatre, pure pop or just discovering new vocal talent.

...ok, so I am a 44 year old straight male, who has not seen the show, only You Tube clips, but I am not ashamed to say that this CD is fanTASTIC! I spent the best part of my working life in the theatre industry, so am a bit of a luvvie, but this is a really good quality, feel good driving CD. Harmonies are excellent, and it put a huge smile on my face. Gonna order Series 2 now!
Glee Club is Cool March 4, 2010 Mr. R. Wickings (Sussex, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As a lover of the hit show it's no surprise I love the music. There are some awesome songs on this CD including the popular Journey cover. My favourite has to be either Dancing With Myself or Hate On Me.
There is one disappointing thing though, not all the songs from the show are included on the album. The mash-ups should be on here as they were fantastic. But never mind, i'll just have to buy the DVD when it's out!
If you like musicals then you'll love these covers.
