5 out of 5 stars Wicked is.... well, wicked!!   December 25, 2003

Finally, a new, exciting, inspirational musical!! People who doubt the future and sustainability of modern musical theatre should get this CD and have all your worries put to rest. I love this show! Stephen Schwartz has done it again with this marvellous, emotional, soulful score, with some absolutely amazing songs, especially the beautiful 'Defying Gravity'. Kristen Chenowith is good, but completely upstaged by Idina Menzel - superlatives are not enough!! Menzel makes a very convincing Elphaba and sings the songs with fire and passion, her love duet 'As Long As You're Mine' with the gorgeous Fiyero (Norbert Leo Butz) is spine tingling!!If you like modern musicals, BUY THIS CD!!! You will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Truly WICKED!!   August 21, 2004

If you're into Musicals then this is right up your street! The show tells of the pre-Dorothy Oz and explores how those events came to pass and how the Wicked Witch of the West turned out the way she did! The CD has the majority of the songs from the show and begins with the death of the Witch - Noone Mourns the Wicked. From there we are taken back on time! What can I say, a truly wonderful musical. If you are buying this CD I would recommend you hunt the internet for the synposis of the show and make sure you go for the unofficial one which tells all the secrets of the show! With this in your head your enjoyment of the CD will be total!! I thoroughly recommend this CD.

I got onto the Wicked trail after a friend just mentioned it. Then i started seeing Wicked everywhere! I saw 'What is this feeling?' on children in need, and couldn't stop singing it, it was then that i new i was hooked! The songs are amazing, and the voices are spectacular. I'm a member of my local Amatuer Operatic Society, and if i could sing half as well as Idina Menzel, i would be going somewhere! She has an amazing, powerful voice, and the rest of the cast add to the enjoyment. I'm only 17, but this has to be my favourite musical, by FAR. Now i just need to so see it!!
Believe me, once you've listened to this soundtrack, you will be as hooked as i am. Buy it! it's well worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Wicked is 'wicked'   January 16, 2005

If you're a musical theatre fan, then you'll probably already be somewhat acquainted with this Broadway smash, if not then this review may tempt you to add this soundtrack to your collection. Adapted from the book bearing the same title, Wicked, is the prequel to The Wizard of Oz and addresses the contemporary issue of whether an individual is born evil or if circumstance moulds them to be so. With that said, simply by listening to the CD, you probably won't be able to fully decipher the story, far too much material has been omitted. What is left, however, is a pleasant 'highlight' CD that demonstrates why this show has been so successful.
The tracks are a variable musical theatre feast of wit, delectability, and sentiment. The tunes are catchy, and the album contains the perfect balance of upbeat numbers and slow ballads, with I'M NOT THAT GIRL (sung by the show's protagonist Elphaba), being a particularly beautiful and heartfelt example of the latter.
The vocals on the album are outstanding. In a climate where women are greatly under-represented in the field of musical theatre, this album acts as a great showcase. Idina Menzel, who quite rightly won a Tony award for her creation of the role of Elphaba has the most wonderfully emotive and powerful, belting musical theatre voice. Kristin Chenoweth, the other female lead is also incredibly strong and adds a high-pitched twang to her performance that makes the character of Glenda (the good witch) leap out of the CD at you. Joel Grey shines as the Wizard, he has the ability to do what every great musical theatre performer should be able to do, make a song live and breath and become an inclusive part of the story.
Fans of musicals by Stephen Schwartz won't be disappointed, as with his other scores the struggle between good and bad is explored with intelligence and sensitivity.
Ultimately, what makes this such a successful recording, is that it allows us to become involved with the journey of the characters, we laugh and cry with them, which is exactly what great musical theatre should do.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing and new, fantastic !   August 17, 2004

"Wicked", the brilliant new musical by Stephen Schwartz, is a refreshing addition to the Broadway stage. Now the Original Broadway Cast is here on CD, you will listen over and over again. The excellent Kristin Chenoweth as "Glinda" and extra-ordinary Idina Menzel as "Elphaba" are simply first class. This sometimes comic musical is bright and very much welcome. The musical, with the catchy slogan of "The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz", is very very well performed on this CD by the Original Broadway Cast. The company shine in "No One Mourns the Wicked" which provides a fantastic opening to a fantastic show. All of the songs are catchy and memorable, but one or two shine above the rest. These being "Popular", "No One Mourns the Wicked", "Defying Gravity" and "What is this Feeling ?".

Although the musical has a "Wizard of Oz" setting, the score is completely different. Those expecting a whimsical musical will be disappointed as this popular soon-to-be-classic show takes on a style of it's own and is rewarded for doing so.

Mixing both sadness and comedy, Stephen Schwartz has created a brilliant musical with fans all around the world. Catchy songs, wonderful voices and a brilliant score make this recording a true must-have. The ensemble, though only heard on a selection of songs, are powerful and really shine. The accompanying booklet includes full lyrics and a selection of production photos.

This CD, while being the highlights, harnesses the massive power that the full show gives. Refreshing and simply beautiful.
