5 out of 5 stars The Essential Yo-Yo Ma   April 26, 2010

`The Essential Yo-Yo Ma' really is the best place to start if you are new to cello music or the music of this exceptional musician. Across two discs you get a selection of classical pieces, as well as his playing on various soundtracks. He manages to play both traditional classical music and more modern interpretations with equal aplomb and his interpretations of both Philip Glass and Ennio Morricone are wonderful. The booklet isn't the best I've seen of this type of CD package, and the only additional info inside is brief biogs of his albums with pictures of their covers. It would have been nice to have a short essay about his life and career to enjoy as I listened to the music. This is only a minor niggle though and his playing is so rich and evocative that you are soon swept away as you sit back and soak it in. This is a good starting place for those who are new to classical music in general as it is very accessible and it is a great starting place for those who wish to explore the sublime playing of Yo-Yo Ma.

This album is as the title suggests, Essential. My favourite on the album, LIBERTANGO, simply the best.

You don't have to love Classical music to like this album. 5 Stars all the way.

4 out of 5 stars Essential Yo-Yo Ma   June 19, 2010

This is an interesting compilation of Yo-YoMa's work. As with all compilations it leaves you feeling slightly unfulfilled that there is a lack of coherency to the items played. However if you want an overview of an extraodrinary performer this is a valuable addition to yuor collection.
